The use of medicines is one of the principal ways of combating disease. The rise of pharmacology during the middle years of the 20th century saw a huge rise in the number of diseases that could be tackled effectively with drug therapy. The development of new and successful drugs requires advances and insights generated by scientific research. Pharmacology is all about “finding out how drugs work”. It is concerned with the effects of drugs on living organisms and their components such as cells, membranes, organelles, enzymes and DNA. Pharmacology affects us all, almost every day.

Department of Pharmacology train the MBBS undergraduate students regarding the various aspects of therapy and enrich them with correct knowledge of drugs. At the end of the course they come out of the institution as efficient doctors. The broad goal of teaching undergraduate 'Pharmacology and Therapeutics' is to impart the knowledge, skills and attitude that a student should learn in order to prescribe right medicine to the right patient in the right dosage and to maintain these competence throughout his or her professional life.

Departmental Objectives

At the end of course the learner shall be able to:

  • Apply basic principles of Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
  • Describe pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of essential and commonly used drugs.
  • Select and prescribe drug(s) rationally for common ailments and mass therapy under National Health Programmes.
  • Integrate the concept of rational drug therapy in clinical pharmacology.
  • Calculation of drug dosage.
  • Understand principles in management of poisoning, specific antidotes for drug toxicity.
  • Understand the Legal aspects of prescribing drugs.
  • Forsee, recognize, prevent and manage Adverse Drug Events and Drug Interactions
  • Report Adverse Drug Reactions.
  • Indicate causations in prescription of drugs in special medical situations such as pregnancy, lactation, infancy and old age.
  • Understand the principles of Pharmacoeconomics.
  • Understand the principles of Pharmacogenetics & Pharmacogenomics.
  • Understand the Principles of Evidence Based Medicine.
  • Understand the role of experimental pharmacology in drug development

  • Clinical Pharmacy Lab
  • Equipped with all the essential instruments and reagents for demonstration and practice of pharmacy exercises.

  • Experimental Pharmacology Lab
  • Equipped with all the essential instruments for demonstration of animal experiments and charts.

  • Research Lab
  • Fully equipped research lab for conducting basic research.

Museum

There is a well set up museum where the history of medicine;scientist's biography; crude products, preserved and pictures of medicinal plants; photos of adverse drug reactions.Drug specimens of modern medicine are displayed which enable the undergraduate to gather information regarding sources of drugs, dosage forms, routes of drug administration.

Animal house

Well furnished animal house containing rabbits, rats, mice, guinea pigs for the purpose of conducting research works by all the departments in this institution.

Demonstration Hall

With a capacity to seat approximately 50 students and equipped with audio-visual aids including OHP & LCD projectors.

Departmental Library

Department library has wide collection of books concerning medical and nursing pharmacology as well as other medical specialties.

Academic activities

The undergraduate teaching programme is carried out efficiently with the help of lectures, practicals, seminars, demonstrations and integrated teaching classes. Students are assigned with projects related to Pharmacovigilance and ADR monitoring. This helps in creating awareness among students regarding rational drug use, drug interatctions and adverse drug reactions.

Institutional Ethics Committee

A faculty of the department chairs the Institutional ethics committee which provides guidance in ethical aspects related to research study.
